When a homeowner searches for a plumber near me, the map results, often called the Map Pack or local pack, can capture the first click. Those results are driven largely by your Google Business Profile (GBP). Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance, and prominence. You can’t change where the searcher is standing, but you can strengthen the other two.

This checklist walks through each part of your profile in a practical order.

The three ranking ideas to remember

  • Relevance: How well your profile matches what the person searched for
  • Distance: How far your business is from the searcher or the location they entered
  • Prominence: How well known and trusted your business is, based on information Google has about you, including reviews, links, and overall web presence

Checklist 1: Foundation

  • Claim and verify your profile. Without verification, you won’t have full control.
  • Use your real business name. Don’t add keywords or locations to your name to try to rank. Google’s guidelines require your name to reflect how your business is presented in the real world, and violations can lead to suspension.
  • Be consistent with name, address, and phone number across your website and major directories.
  • Use a local phone number you answer, and make sure the website you list loads quickly on mobile.
  • Handle your address correctly. If you serve customers at their homes and don’t welcome customers at your location, set up your profile as a service-area business and hide your address.

Checklist 2: Categories and services

  • Pick the best primary category. For many plumbers, that’s Plumber, but check what’s available for your market and focus.
  • Add relevant secondary categories only for services you really offer, such as drain cleaning or water heater services where available.
  • List your services with clear, honest descriptions: leak repair, drain cleaning, water heater repair and installation, sewer line services, and so on.
  • Choose attributes that apply to you, such as being open 24 hours if true.

Checklist 3: Service areas and hours

  • List the areas you actually serve. Google limits how many service areas you can add, so prioritize the ones that matter most.
  • Set accurate hours, including special hours for holidays.
  • Keep emergency messaging honest. Only promise round-the-clock service if someone really answers.

Checklist 4: Business description and photos

  • Write a clear description that explains who you are, what you do, and where you work, in natural language without keyword stuffing.
  • Upload real photos: your trucks, uniformed technicians, completed work, and your team. Photos signal an active business and build trust.
  • Add a logo and cover image that look professional.
  • Refresh photos regularly, not just once at setup.

Checklist 5: Reviews

Reviews are central to prominence and to how customers choose. We cover the business case in detail in our post on how reviews drive plumbing revenue. For GBP specifically:

  • Ask every customer for a review, ideally soon after the job, using your direct review link.
  • Reply to reviews, positive and negative, in a professional tone.
  • Never buy, trade for, or fake reviews. It violates Google’s policies and can lead to penalties.
  • Keep reviews coming over time. Recent feedback matters to customers.

Checklist 6: Posts, updates, and engagement

  • Post updates about seasonal tips, promotions, or completed projects, as appropriate for your profile.
  • Keep your contact options current. Make sure your phone number and any messaging options your profile offers are accurate and answered quickly. Google has retired some profile messaging features, so check what’s available in your account.
  • Monitor calls and messages and handle them like any other lead.

Checklist 7: Website and tracking

  • Link to the most relevant page, usually your homepage or a primary location page.
  • Use tracking carefully. If you add tracking parameters to your website link, keep them consistent so you can attribute calls and visits without breaking the link.
  • Make sure your site supports the profile: service pages, local content, and clear contact options.

Checklist 8: Ongoing maintenance

  • Check your profile monthly for unauthorized edits, new suggested changes, or duplicate listings.
  • Watch for policy notices and respond right away.
  • Update details immediately when hours, phone numbers, or services change.
  • Track performance such as calls, direction requests, and website clicks, and compare month to month.

What a profile can’t do alone

A perfect profile doesn’t guarantee Map Pack placement. Distance, competition, and your overall web presence all influence results. But a complete, accurate, active profile gives you the best foundation to compete.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to rank in the Map Pack?

There’s no fixed timeline. It depends on your market’s competition, your profile’s starting point, and how consistently you improve it.

Can I add keywords to my business name?

No. Google’s guidelines expect your name to reflect your real-world business name, and keyword stuffing can lead to suspension.

Should I hide my address?

If you don’t serve customers at your location, set up as a service-area business and hide the address, as Google allows.

Do I need a separate profile for each city?

Not unless you have a staffed, physical location in that city that qualifies under Google’s guidelines. Avoid creating profiles at virtual offices or mailbox addresses.

How often should I post and update photos?

Aim for consistency you can sustain. Regular updates show customers that the business is active.
